"The bowl is on the grass."

Fletcher set a metal bowl near the bench. Morning light fell across the playground slide. A brown dog padded close and wagged its tail. It pressed a cool nose to Fletcher's cheek.

"I can fill it," Ruby said. She lifted a green watering can by the fence. The can was light, so she tipped it. No water came out of the spout. She walked toward the tap beside the sandbox.

Sprinklers clicked on and began watering the grass. A fine spray dotted the bench and bowl. The dog hopped back and shook its ears dry. The leash pulled the bowl a hand's width on grass. It caught the bench leg and nudged a short stick.

The stick rolled into a shallow puddle by the slide. The dog circled the bench to the dry side. Fletcher slid the bowl under the seat out of spray. "It reaches here now," Ruby said. Ruby tilted the can toward the lowered bowl. A thin stream arched into the bowl and rang softly. The dog lapped from the bowl.
