Cal pulled hard on the plastic handle. The door shook a little, but it stayed closed. Morning light fell across dust inside the small shed. Kit held the frame and steadied the rattling hinge.

They came to build a small trellis for beans. The can for watering sat just beyond the door. It looked easy to reach, but the latch resisted. Kit pushed near the edge; nothing slid free. Cal tried lifting, then pressing down with both hands.

Cal leaned close and checked each part of the latch. He touched the top with the inside of his wrist. A beam of sun fell on that top spot. Warmth met his skin; the plastic there bent slightly.

Cal pressed the warm spot, and the catch flexed open. “It moved a little,” Kit said. The door sprang a little, and air moved into the shed. A broom slid from the door hook and bumped the watering can. The can tipped; a thin stream ran across the floor. It curved toward the step and darkened the dusty line.

Kit caught the can and set it upright near boots. Water gathered at the step in a shallow, shining oval. Cal nudged the door wider and left it resting open. Cal slid the broom back onto the lower hook.
