Ulysses crouched on the pavement and pulled it back. A light flour smell rose near a small cup.

A coin pressed the band beside his thumb. Glynis set a plastic ruler under a second band. She bent the ruler tip and wedged it with a stick.

They traded turns and watched the line of parts. Ulysses opened his fingers, and the band threw the coin. The coin flashed past a chalk ring on the ground. A sharp clink came when it met the stick. The wedge jumped free from the bent ruler.

The bent ruler sprang up and tapped a clothespin. Its spring popped open and dropped a small photo. The photo brushed the cup, and a white puff rose.

The ruler kept bouncing near the pin and the cup. Glynis slid her hand in and turned the motion aside. "It snapped fast today," Glynis said. Fine flour still drifted over the pavement and fell.
