Thin dust brushed its belly under a heavy bench. A mild soap smell rose from the clean floor. An open door showed a quiet music room. A student sat at the piano and tapped keys.

A sweet fruit scent reached the cat's nose near a chair. A soft bag hung there, its zipper open a little. The cat sprang up, and the bag slid along. It bumped a thick book on the bench beside it. The book tipped forward and fell onto the keys. Several notes rang, bright and sudden, then slowly faded.

The student jerked back, eyes wide. "I heard that!" A teacher walked in and looked at the piano. "We can take this section again," the teacher said. The music lesson paused while hands fixed the book. The book lay open at a new section. Warm air stayed near the window glass. Under the bench, the cat pressed low and stilled. Its ears turned toward a tiny tick on a shelf. Tick by tick, paws placed down between the sounds.

A red apple rolled from the bag and slowed nearby. The cat nosed the apple and bit the thin skin. The room filled again with scales and careful, slow notes. The chord from before left no mark on the keys. The bench kept a small scuff along its edge. Under the piano, juice dotted the floor as the cat chewed.
