English 원문

A soft crackle climbed through the kitchen as the first loaf cooled on the wire rack near the open, flour-dusted counter.

Outside the screen, a small sparrow dropped onto the sill and held a quizzical tilt, one bright eye steady on the room.

Arlo's oven mitts closed the door; warmth rolled out and settled over the bench, where light made the powdery trails look luminous.

Long bars of morning light lay across the counter, brightening fingerprints in flour and the chalky crescents along the bowls' rims.

Valda lifted the damp cloth from the resting mound, the dough rising back against her fingers, elastic and a little tacky with life.

On the shelf, the timer chimed and went quiet, a small ping swallowed by the warm air.

She had scored the earlier loaf with a wooden pick, four shallow lines that now lifted into pale ridges across the browned crust.

The starter in its clay crock, just fed, showed a multitude of tiny bubbles, each pinprick catching light along the ring of clean glass.

"It's singing," Arlo said, leaning close enough to hear the crust's faint pops as they chased one another across the cooling dome.

A papery rustle answered from the windowsill planter where last season's chive sheaths clung in curled sleeves, bleached and fragile against the frame.

The sparrow hopped once, pecked at a husk, and shook free a pale strip that hung like thread from the tough stem.

"Do you see the stripes?" Valda asked, touching the loaf's ridges while her eyes stayed with the small bird beyond the mesh.

They rose onto their toes for a better angle; the sill sat high, and the screen's grid blurred the close view.

A vacant chair stood by the table, pushed back with its legs skewed, forgotten in the faint drift of flour.

Arlo pinched a loose flake of crust, then paused mid-reach, his hand hovering above the rack as the sparrow ignored the crumb completely.

Another sparrow flicked into view and jostled for the narrow spot, a tiny rivalry of wings that ended before the flake even dropped.

Both birds worked the dry stems instead, beaks busy with the brittle sleeves until one arrowed away carrying a tidy mustache of fibers.

Screen wires kept everything separate; Valda's palm pressed the mesh once, then lowered, and the kitchen air seemed to settle with her.

The pale strip crossed its beak like a ribbon, while crumbs on the stone ledge stayed untouched, a dusty scatter nobody claimed.

"How's the loaf?" called a voice from the next room, and Arlo tapped the bottom gently, listening for the hollow knock through the base.

The crust crackled less now, each tiny tick further apart, the sound thinning as air escaped through the pale ridges.

The refreshed starter began to lift again, slow and patient under the lid; will it crown the glass before lunchtime, or later?

Arlo slid the jar closer to the oven's side, its glass faintly clouded by steam that trailed from the browning loaf.
