English 원문
Wet grit pressed into Birch's palms as he packed a small ball of earth. The flat stone worktop felt rough under his fingers, steady and cool despite the noon warmth. Cal set a tin beside him, and a small watering can stood near the tap. They planned a row of thumb-sized cups and a shallow bowl for the drying shelf. Old pieces on the plank showed hairline cracks and pale rings from earlier hours in the sun. A soft spectrum of earth tones ran along the plank, from wheat to chestnut under steady light. Warm air lay close to the boards, and the soil smelled deep, sweet, and faintly leafy. A bee passed the fence and faded, while water tapped softly into the tin from a slow drip. Birch spooned water into the bowl, stirred, and watched the mix slacken until a rim slumped. "This slides," Cal said, holding the pan level and watching a tiny wave creep to the edge. Birch adjusted the water by tipping the can briefly, then folded in a handful of dry soil. They pressed the walls up again, turning the bowl like a slow drum until the ridge stayed firm.
Cal reached for the plank, and it rocked; one brick showed a chipped corner and sank slightly. A grape slipped from Birch's pocket, met the tiny slope, and rolled toward the new cups. Birch lifted his palm to stop it, and the little bead slowed against his skin. A wet ring marked the plank where it paused, and the cups trembled on their saucers. Cal slid a wooden spoon handle under the low end, and Birch held the far side steady. Together they raised the plank a thumb, then eased the cups into a straighter line along it. The improved mix mattered now; the firmer walls stayed upright when fingers brushed the rims into circles. They added one touch to each piece, pressing the grape as a stamp to set a round seal. Silt in the rinse tin sank; clarity came as the surface turned clear and showed the bottom again. Birch tipped the can once more, and a final bright drop slid onto the last unfinished rim. He drew it thin with one slow swipe; the can tipped farther, and nothing more left the spout.
