English 원문
No low hum rose from the slip face today, only the wind's thin whisper skimming ripple crests along the dune's pale spine.
Harris and Zadie stood on the crest where their footprints blurred quickly, and their steps found firmer purchase on the windward rise.
From the trail below, a voice drifted up between gusts, a plain question about which way the breeze ran.
Zadie pressed a slender stick into a shallow socket of sand, twisting until the shaft stood without wobble at the migrating ridge.
Its tight shadow hugged the leeward side at first, then kept widening across the cooler slope as the sun edged along.
He scooped a double handful from the windward face, grains coarser there, and let them ribbon down over the lip toward the stillness.
The slide whispered and went mute; nothing boomed, and only his chin strap answered, vibrating faintly against the brim.
"Hear it?" Zadie said, her head tipped, one hand cupped near an ear that faced the lee.
Harris raised his foot for a harder shove, paused mid-lift, and set his heel back into the ripples instead.
He tried a slower pour along the edge where a thumb-sized overhang had formed, and the sand eased over itself like a pelt.
The air answered with the hiss of moving grains and the murmur of wind in the sage that clutched the lower slope.
Down near the scrub, woody stems seemed to intertwine and hold, their crossed roots pinning tiny ledges that caught pale fans of powder.
He pinched the two sides, windward grit and leeward silk, and let each sift between fingers at different speeds.
What reached their ears was mostly absence, a held room where the hissing lived alone.
"Only the strap," Harris said, thumb resting on it to still the tiny buzz against his jaw.
Between breaths, the stick’s shadow spread into an oval stain on the lee, and their early prints softened into shallow dimples.
A lizard’s track crossed one ripple and stopped where fresh grains had already folded its toes into the pattern.
Harris leaned over the crest, ears level with the drop, his palm measuring the breeze that arrived in soft pulses.
Another slide he started with a sweep of his forearm, broader this time; the slope offered only a long, low hush.
From the trail, the earlier voice rose again between ripples of wind, and then faded before any words reached them.
Harris lifted the planted stick, checked the round socket it left, and seated it deeper by a finger’s width.
Zadie lowered her canteen for a sip, tested the warm metal with her lip, and let the cap tap back with a small clang.
They watched grains travel in glints over the ridge line, ripple after ripple, while the day printed and erased its own notes.
Their water ran lower and warmer by the minute, and a stripe of grit clung along the canteen where it lay against the shade.
