English 원문
Mae walked the cleared path beside Rafe, eyes on the familiar pail hanging warm against the old maple's trunk.
Light slanted through bare branches, and the slow drop formed, fattened, and let go with the soft sound she already knew.
She lifted her mitten like a metronome and tried to count the drip, attending to the small swell that gathered before the fall.
The pail's rim threw a pale glare, and the drop's rounded skin broke that glare into a bright crescent that slipped away as her count reached four.
Her hand hovered near the fresh tap without touching, then tucked back to her ribs; heels pressed the snow, and her mouth closed on whatever word had risen.
She stepped along the path's edge and let the drip go on without her count, turning toward the pale healed circles low on the same trunk.
Two fingertips met one circle lightly, reading the smooth rim the bark had grown, grazing rather than pressing, then lifting so the skin would not warm the spot.
Across the lane, a cabinet door closed with a flat wooden hush, and a chickadee answered from a high branch with two crisp notes and a breath between.
At the boil-shed, the doorway stood propped with a split wedge, and steam thickened where the sun struck it slantwise, turning briefly opaque before thinning above the roofline.
By the path a low crate held spare lids and wire hooks in a small disorder, and Mae nudged two lids into a pair with their edges aligned.
Rafe watched her boot scrape once, then said, "It is open," and nodded toward the shed door with its wedge and its pale plume washing the air.
Mae did not implore another try at counting or a move closer; her mitten rested on the crate's rim, and her shoulders rose and settled inside the coat.
She drew a short line in the powder beside the path with one knuckle, then lifted, then drew again, the spacing near the patient rhythm the drip kept.
Turning back, the sun had slid a finger's width, and the drop's skin no longer flashed wide glare but held a thin amber seam along its lower edge.
She bent her knees and brought her eyes level with the pail's lip so the healed circle and the bead lined together, one ring and one rounded drop.
A breath left her nose in a faint plume, and the metal tap stayed dull where light did not reach, the pail's stain-mark catching a strip of gold.
Rafe said, "Here," and shifted half a step so his coat stopped laying shadow across the rim, his boots steady on the hard strip of path.
The next drop gathered, showed a narrow seam of amber, then slipped clean; the pale circle brightened as the pail rang once and the grove held still.
