English 원문
The same heavy printing bench held its quiet rectangle under the window, its top rubbed pale where many hands had worked.
Poppy set her palms on the smooth edge and felt the dents and polish that mapped the place better than any drawing.
From the wall cistern near the sink came a small regimen of sounds: a breathless glug, a pause, then one cool drop into the bowl.
Each drop dusted her tongue with a faint metallic tang, the kind water keeps after lingering in old pipes.
Wilder rocked the roller across the slab, and the tack pulled softly as a thin skin formed, tin-bright on Poppy’s back palate.
At the bench’s far corner, a shallow display tray from an exhibitor booth kept a stack of old proofs, their edges tasting chalk-dry in the air.
The cistern continued its private counting, glug, hush, drop, and the drain gave back a faint briny aftertaste when steam from the rinse warmed the sink.
Light angled across the tools, and the worn beech handles showed dark ovals where thumbs had pressed for seasons, each oval like a sip held too long.
Poppy inked the carved block, a cross-section tree with rings and a pale cambium band near the bark; the ridges tasted astringent through the air.
She laid the damp sheet and set the baren flat, then began circles that tightened at the edges where the fibers drank more slowly.
Halfway across, the baren stalled against a tackier patch, and her wrist slowed, then paused, as if her tongue had found a stubborn bit of bitter.
"Good pace," Wilder said, and he tapped a knuckle on the bench without hurrying the circles she was making.
Glug, hush, drop; the cistern shaped its own chewable rhythm now, a slow salt on the tongue that matched nothing yet on the bench.
Under the sheet, the raised rings pressed back, not perfectly round; the block kept a small asymmetry where one year grew drier and a knot bunched.
Her circles adjusted toward that corner, lighter, then firmer, and the heel of her hand learned the difference by taste of effort alone.
Under her palm, the rings ran backward beneath the sheet, waiting for the peel to set them straight.
Her breath held for a beat as drip and circle landed together under her palm.
She lifted a corner and peeled slowly, the paper giving in small sounds, while a colony of stipples gathered along a ring near the knot.
The pale cambium band printed faint and sweet, and the darker heartwood read as a mellow bitterness that lingered along the edge of her lip.
She listened to nothing now but the two beats sharing a space, and her fingers finished the peel in the same measured count.
The print lay forward on the felt as her mouth tasted tin and starch, and the next circle began where both rhythms met the rings.
