English 原文
Late afternoon sunlight spilled across the old glass roof of Riverside Station, turning the impromptu food fair beneath it into a bright mosaic of stalls. Mara followed the drifting aroma of butter and herbs between travelers dragging suitcases. Her goal rested on a rumor picked up over coffee: somewhere amid the clatter, a violet-tinted gourmet croissant crackled like parchment outside and hid silky lemon cream inside. She sketched the air with quick steps, pausing whenever a trolley rattled across her path. Refrigerated display cases hummed at her sides; yet the fabled pastry remained out of sight; the strap of her camera bag creaked tighter against her shoulder as her pace picked up.
A swirl of chatter swept along the platform and gathered at a narrow stand wedged beside a news kiosk. The gregarious woman behind the griddle balanced conversation and batter with enviable rhythm, flipping paper-thin crêpes while teasing a cluster of commuters about their heavy suitcases. Platters crowded her countertop: brioche coiled in cinnamon, tiny éclairs blinking with glaze, and, center stage, a row of violet croissants glowing like amethyst shards. Mara slipped into the queue; rolling cases bumped her ankles, conversations overlapped, and the warm scent of caramelized sugar pressed close, while the elusive pastry now rested only two arm-lengths away.
Just as Mara reached the front, a boy brushed her elbow; her camera swung outward, nudging a tray. Three crêpes slid, teetered, and one toppled toward the concrete. She lunged, palm open. The disc of batter met her wrist, wobbling but settling without tearing. A chorus of gasps rolled through the queue, and a murmur of wonderment rippled down the line. The vendor lifted an eyebrow, a quizzical expression crossing her wind-reddened face, then released a quiet chuckle. She exchanged Mara’s rescued crêpe for the coveted croissant and set the tray back into place with exaggerated care.
Coins chimed into a tin box while a silver-haired porter leaned closer to the pastries. "That’s the master chef from the Grand Terrace," he said to the air, voice half-lost beneath the tannoy buzz. Phones rose, flashes blinked, yet the woman merely bowed once and returned to her griddle. Mara bit into the croissant: layers shattered, lemon cooled her tongue, and rosemary threaded its aroma through the steam. The crowd drifted forward again, noise swelling, smell of caramel drifting beneath the vaulted roof. Steam curled above the last crêpe on the stall countertop.
