Lucas on the Narrow Stairs-

Story Content
English Original
Lucas balanced a small cart at the foot of the narrow attic stairs. He wanted to try to make a difference in the quiet house. He had chosen one piece of unused furniture—a tall, scratched bookcase. The stairs that curved sharply toward the hallway created the first obstacle. His first attempt began well; the wheels rolled until the highest step. There the cart tipped and pinned his elbow against the rail. A thud echoed through dust, and papers drifted from a shelf. Lucas paused. He has often repaired loose screws, but shifting a full bookcase felt larger. He adjusted the straps. The cart would need to trust its own wheels, so he moved with slower hands.
Halfway down, a quiet crack snapped under the lower board. Lucas stopped before the sound spread. Light from the hallway revealed a thin drawer hidden below the bottom shelf. He had never seen such a compartment. After sliding the bookcase against the wall, he knelt and pulled the secret drawer free. Inside lay a folded map of their town, marked by dozens of tiny circles. The discovery became an unexpected accomplishment resting in his palm, yet the stairs still waited. He removed every book, reduced the weight, and guided the empty frame through the turn. The bookcase was finally settled beside the window, and dust settled with it.
