Lea Before Lantern Night-

English Original
Lea balanced on a narrow wooden ladder outside the town hall while afternoon shadows lengthened. She planned to hang a bright paper star above the archway for the spring festival. The star looked light, yet its frame felt firm under layered silk. A sudden gust spun the star until its orientation shifted, and the cord slipped from her fingers. The ladder rocked; her boot scraped the rung. She had rehearsed the sequence throughout the morning, but preparation vanished under the restless wind.
Below, Marcus steadied the ladder, though his shoulders twitched each time the timber creaked. The archway had been draped with ribbon by younger volunteers, yet the highest space remained empty. Lea tried again; knots tightened, but the cord tangled around a metal hinge. In synchronization Marcus raised the ladder slightly while she loosened the cord, yet the star bumped the wall and cracked. The impact revealed a hollow compartment inside the frame, and a folded slip of paper slid free. If Lea had known the star hid anything, she would have inspected it before climbing. The note drifted away, and curious murmurs rippled across the square.
Lea replaced the cracked star with a lantern shaped like a smiling moon, accepting Marcus’s coil of thicker twine. Wind brushed lighter now, and their movements found quieter synchronization. Whimsy brightened the square as other lanterns rose beside hers, casting gentle colors on newly lit stalls. Music from distant pipes blended with soft laughter while the ladder rested at last against the ground. Colored ribbons rested against the quiet window.
Translation
