English Original
Marisol balanced a slim ladder beneath the gym’s skylight, her sleeves brushed with dried paint specks. Owen, a maverick with improvised tools, uncoiled ribbon the color of fresh lilac blossoms. They aimed to fasten an exquisite paper lantern near the skylight, letting tomorrow’s fair begin under gentle light. The metal frame had been welded by older students during winter and now waited for decoration. Dust drifted every time the ladder knocked the beam, and Marisol’s shoulders tightened while she steadied each rung. Owen had already tested the lantern’s battery, yet its switch still blinked faintly in his palm.
Marisol climbed but the ladder rocked, its rubber foot sliding on polished wood, so she climbed back down quickly. Owen dragged a wide mat from the wrestling corner and slipped it under the ladder’s feet. The structure wobbled again once the lantern’s hook finally met the beam. If they had measured earlier, the ribbon would have fitted exactly, but an extra loop forced the lantern to hang crookedly. He trimmed the ribbon with small scissors; the tension snapped, and the tender glow blinked out. The battery pack had shifted after the jolt, so Owen tapped it, and a steady glimmer returned. Marisol tried again; this time her wrist grazed scattered confetti, and a purple flake clung to the lens, dulling the light.
Owen wiped the lens with the edge of his sleeve, yet the lantern still hung unevenly, tilting toward the scoreboard. He had nearly given up when faint basketball whistles echoed outside, vibrating the roof panels and nudging the ribbon along the beam. The knot slid a few centimeters, straightening the lantern exactly beneath the skylight’s circular frame. Marisol’s eyebrows lifted; she steadied the ladder while Owen stepped back, mouth partly open at the accidental fix. Light poured through the glass, striking the paper until its lilac surface shimmered like water at zenith. Above them, the lilac lantern rested against the rafters, steady at the hall's quiet zenith.
Translation
