Julian pushed his small dinghy away from the weathered pier, aiming to glide into the inner harbor before night settled. He had spent the afternoon checking every rope and hinge, certain nothing would delay the short voyage. The patched sail hung neatly, its white cloth bright against the purple water. A folded net, once used for camouflage during a school play, waited under the bench as an odd emergency tool. Thin clouds drifted overhead like slow smoke, and the tide tapped against the hull. With a quiet breath, Julian loosened the main line and watched the canvas billow, imagining smooth water ahead.

A sudden scrape broke the rhythm when the boom refused to lock. An old knot had been tied by somebody in a hurry last season. Julian tugged once, twice, and then searched the locker for spare cord. He discovered that a gull had stolen most of it. The bird wheeled above the channel, straw and bright twine dangling toward a half-finished nest on the breakwater. His friend waited on the pier, watching for a familiar white triangle. The watcher stared straight past the boat until Julian tapped the piling with an oar. Laughter burst, echoing against warehouse walls, and a rope dropped for mooring. Warm light from the dock lamps rested calmly on the patched sail.
