Leo crouched beside the old storage bay at dawn, lining slender pieces of driftwood along a chalk outline on the floor. He had spent three weeks collecting every branch that floated in from the jungle river upstream, and each stick still carried the faint scent of moss. His goal looked simple: turn the scattered wood and four plastic barrels into a small floating stage for the summer music evening. The balance relied on one quiet innovation; the barrels would slide into cages under the deck and keep the platform level even when musicians stamped their feet. By noon the last board had been nailed, and the narrow crane, repaired by neighbors the previous night, lifted the structure toward the open doors. A low chorus of geese flapped outside, circling the dock like impatient spectators.

The crane jerked suddenly, and the ropes twisted. The leading edge bumped a beam, knocking two barrels loose. Water splashed through the gap below. If Leo had measured the tide correctly, the vessel would have touched the river more gently. Instead the platform tilted, and the waiting geese scattered in a storm of feathers. Leo’s knees scraped the planks, yet he caught the barrels before they drifted away. He slid them back, then tightened each cage with extra wire. On the second try, the crane creaked again; one wheel on its rail refused to roll. He hammered the rust free, and the wheel turned. At last the deck kissed the surface. A mild wind carried the smell of wet rope across the dock. A faint cheer drifted from workers nearby, but another surprise waited: a floating log wedged itself under the stern and pinned the raft to the pilings. Leo waded in, shoved the stubborn driftwood aside, and guided the ropes to the cleats. Between the pillars, the new raft rested against the dock.
