English Original
Mila stepped onto the village square just after sunrise. The crisp air nipped her cheeks while a cart rattled past. She had waited all week for the baker’s new loaf. Her sensitive nose caught roasted grain drifting above booths. Between stalls, bunches of jasmine dangled beside bright oranges. A coarse wool scarf brushed her chin as she joined the line. Voices blended with clinking coins, and pigeons fluttered near scattered crumbs. Time slipped; the queue crawled forward, and the basket on her arm grew heavier. Mila counted three small coins, fearing they would disappear before her turn arrived.
When only one customer remained ahead, a loud barrel rolled between stalls, scattering everyone sideways. The stranger grabbed the last displayed loaf, and it was carried off before she blinked. Two forces now pressed her: the shrinking time before class and the tightening crowd around emptier shelves. Instead of waiting again, Mila slipped down a narrow side alley. The path has connected the back of the bakery to the well. The baker, who has kept a window open for cooling bread, stood there. He noticed the small branch of jasmine tied to her basket and smiled. A fresh, yet still coarse-crusted test loaf rested on the sill, forgotten by customers. Without words, he broke a corner, handed it across, and her three coins remained untouched. Steam rose slowly from the torn bread while bells chimed above the square.
Translation
