At mid-morning along Willow Gorge, Milo set down his rucksack and lifted a worn sketchbook. For almost a decade he had roamed valley trails, filling those pages with birds nobody else bothered to notice. Today a tall heron stood motionless on a gravel bar below, its reflection trembling in the slow water. The slender bird had been considered a key player in local river health studies, and Milo hoped to capture every angle. He balanced on a flat sandstone outcrop that jutted above the gorge, sharpened a pencil, and began to outline the long beak. A sudden gust rattled dry reeds, throwing dust across the paper and scattering his first fragile lines.
Undeterred, Milo shifted left, believing the wind might press against the cliff instead of his page. That plan collapsed when a hanging branch swept into view and blocked half the river. He searched for a clearer perch, found a narrow shelf farther down, and lowered himself carefully. If he had known the shelf had been loosened by last week’s rain, he would have avoided it. The stone shifted, his boot slipped, and graphite snapped beneath his fingers. The heron lifted, wings beating lazily, then glided upriver until its pale form blended with mist beyond a bend. Milo’s shoulders sagged, and he climbed back toward the first viewpoint.
Minutes stretched. Pebbles ticked beneath his tapping heel, yet the river kept a steady hush. Then, without warning, the heron drifted over the gorge again, circling lower than before. Instead of the gravel bar, it settled beside Milo’s pack, just two arm-lengths away, as though the earlier commotion had never happened. Milo froze; even his breath paused. Light traced the bird’s folded wings, and its eye reflected the sky above the outcrop. The sketchbook reopened, held between quiet hands, and a new pencil moved in short, careful strokes until the elegant curve of a neck spread across the paper. Graphite marks rested across the open page.
Translation
