Milo decided to undertake a Saturday experiment: turning scraps of cedar into a model boat sturdy enough for the school pond. He had collected a shoebox filled with sandpaper, glue, string, and other slender implements that clinked whenever he lifted the lid. The process began on the back porch, where sunlight lay over the table like warm cloth. By noon the hull had been sanded smooth by hours of steady rubbing, and a nuanced stripe of forest green ran along the sides, painted with a thin brush. He tried a first launch in a bucket, yet the bow dipped sharply, and water crept across the deck while his shoulders tightened.
He trimmed the keel, added a coin beneath the stern, attempted another test. The balance improved, but a wandering gust toppled the mast and scattered nails across the boards. If he had stopped then, the porch would have stayed tidy, yet curiosity kept his fingers moving. Milo shortened the mast, switched cotton for lighter thread, and stitched a triangular sail from an old handkerchief. The afternoon slipped forward, and tiny wood curls gathered around his feet like pale confetti. When the final knot held, he walked to the pond behind the gym, boots pressing wet grass into dark prints.
The surface looked calm, though ripples traveled from a family of ducks drifting nearby. Milo waited for a quiet pocket, then set the vessel down and gave a gentle push. The third launch surprised him: a stray ripple spun the boat toward a low overhanging branch, where a red kite string dangled forgotten from the last school fair. The sail hooked the string, and the boat lifted for a heartbeat, sliding into the air before settling among the branches above the water. Sunlight touched the green stripe as if accepting the change, and Milo’s grin widened while water rings faded below. The small craft rested among the leaves, its painted hull steady against the bark.
