Warm air hung above the stream, and dragonflies traced silver loops between patches of sunlit mist. It was midsummer, and Milo crouched on the wooden footbridge clutching a narrow board cut from a cupboard panel. The board carried a faded price tag that flapped against his fingers like a loose ribbon. Milo had spent the morning sanding the surface smooth; tiny curls of wood had been swept away by the breeze. Now he planned to launch the makeshift raft and watch it travel through the stone culvert beneath the bridge.
He lowered the raft onto the shallow water beside the bridge span. The current proved weaker than expected, and the craft drifted sideways into thick reeds near the bank. He stretched his arm, nudging the board free, but fresh tangles of root snagged the tag and stopped it again. If he had known the channel so narrow, he would have brought a longer pole for pushing. Instead, Milo waded knee-deep, snapped loose the worst branches, and set the raft back on the clearer path. A sudden gust rippled the surface and flipped the board, soaking the underside and leaving the tag sodden.
Milo scooped the raft out, added a flat pebble as ballast, and wiped water from the panel with his sleeve. While turning it over, he spotted a tiny green beetle clinging under the grain, its limbs tucked against the wood. His hand jerked, yet his shoulders lifted, and he settled the insect again on the damp deck, leaving it free to ride. The third launch went clean; the pebble kept the nose down, and the raft slipped straight toward the dark culvert. Milo hurried along the bank, crouching at the far mouth where cool shade pooled like ink around smooth stones. Several heartbeats passed before the raft shot from the tunnel, beetle unshaken, tag fluttering, and spray sparkling across the afternoon light. Beyond the bridge, the little raft rested against a mossy root.
