Leona carefully checked the late-afternoon sky and slowly lifted her old camera. She had promised her younger brother a photograph of the bronze weather vane on the town library tower. The vane caught orange light whenever daylight slipped behind the rooftops, and she wanted that exact moment. A street festival already filled the main square, lanterns hanging above the marching band. At the first intersection she found a row of painted stalls blocking her view. Traffic cones redirected walkers and forced the route to diverge into a maze of side alleys. Guitar strings hummed from nearby cafés while the sunlight kept sliding lower. She quickened her pace, boots tapping against the uneven bricks beneath her.
Her shortcut ended beside the library fence, yet the gate refused to budge when she pressed the latch. If the gate had opened, her climb would have ended in minutes. She tried again; the bar remained rigid, and the vane continued turning above her like a distant compass. A back door near the entrance offered another chance, but its knob was wrapped in chain. As she examined the lock, strains of a practiced waltz drifted from the music school next door. Windows on its third floor faced the tower roof across a narrow gap. She slid into the school’s side stairwell, stepping past students who balanced cellos. At the top, a fire escape crossed toward the library wall nearby. One rung bent under her weight, yet she steadied herself with the railing and kept climbing.
Sunset finally brushed the town with reddish gold as she knelt on the creaking platform. The tower fin glimmered only a few quiet meters away under the fading light. She lifted the camera, yet a cool gust fogged the lens, turning the scene into a hazy rhapsody of colors. Sleeve pressed against glass, she wiped the circle clear and tried a second shot. The shutter clicked just once as she held her breath there briefly. In that instant, a bright paper kite burst upward from the festival, its tail spinning through the same light. The unexpected shape danced between her and the vane, tracing curves like partners in an airborne waltz. Without moving from the narrow plank, she refocused, capturing kite and vane together against the glowing clouds. The camera rested between her hands while the kite hovered beside the darkening tower.
