English Original
Elena had planned a quick climb to the old water tower, hoping to sketch the roofs of her town glowing under late sunshine. The iron ladder had been repaired by a meticulous caretaker, yet the lowest rung still rocked whenever her boot pressed it. A lone falcon drifted above the tower, its shadow sliding across her page and breaking the first lines of charcoal. When the latch at the platform jammed, her pencil tapped the metal rhythmically while her free hand nudged the rusty bar until it gave way with a dull click. If that initial incident had not slowed her, she would have started shading before the light shifted.
A gust reached the platform, flipping her sketchbook and slapping loose pages against her cheek. The paper showed unexpected resilience, but the wind scattered two sticks of charcoal onto the narrow stair. As she stooped to gather them, a weasel shot from a gap between boards, dashed across her boot, and disappeared down a drainpipe. Her elbow knocked the portable stool; its legs folded, and it clattered against a rail. Elena steadied it, tied the sketchbook with a ribbon torn from her sleeve, and waited while a thick cloud dragged itself over the sun, bleaching the town’s colors.
Minutes later, sunlight returned at a lower angle, catching a patch of sunflower plants that had taken root beside the tower’s base. Their tall stems and mirrored faces bounced golden light upward, brightening the bricks and, unexpectedly, the underside of the platform. Elena angled her page toward the reflected glow, letting it replace the lost rays. She redrew the rooflines, added the distant river, and deepened the shadows now sliding toward evening. When the final stroke darkened the water, the loosened ribbon drifted away on the breeze. Golden petals rested against the paper.
Translation
