He removed the elbow joint, trimmed it, and tried again, but the gutter still sagged, forcing his shoulders to tense. Moments later the dog bounded through a puddle, splashing mud against the freshly primed inlet. Mason wiped the smear, only to discover a crack around the tap; the plastic had been weakened during storage. If he had known about that flaw, he would have brought a spare fitting from the workshop. Light gradually faded, and distant thunder rumbled behind the tall poplars along the fence.

He improvised with whatever remained on the dusty workbench beside the barrels. A strip of rubber sealed the crack, while shelving boards slid beneath the gutter to give silent support. Each board extended sideways, and the whole line demonstrated horizontal scaling; every extra plank shared the weight across a wider span. When rain finally arrived, drops drummed against the roof, then hurried through patched channels where small bubbles emerged at each joint. At first, only a thin trickle reached the barrels and splashed against their painted sides. Soon the surface inside each drum inched upward, showing gradual improvement with every passing minute. The retriever barked excitedly while water overflowed the last bucket beside the platform. An unseen knot in the rubber had diverted the flow into the herb beds already. By dusk, wide silver pools rested calmly beneath the rosemary and sparkled under the porch light.
