Forrest lifted the top bucket and felt the colder, heavier grain resting at its base; the dog’s collar gave a bright jingle while goats bleated an impatient, almost auditory rhythm beyond the fence. Reaching the goat trough, he noticed yesterday’s water mark—a rust-coloured stripe that circled the inside like careful architecture. One bucket from the pump raised the level only a finger’s width.
