Clara balanced a narrow cardboard box against her elbow while striding across the university courtyard after lunch. The sample inside, ordered for tonight’s geology lecture, had been packed with foam and silver tape for safety. She had spent the early morning calibrating microscopes, yet this simple walk remained the final task of the day. A shallow crater beside the athletic field glimmered with leftover rain, forcing her to detour through the maintenance lane. The lane led to an enclosed area fenced by wire, where forgotten gardening tools narrowed the passage even further.
Beyond the fence, the storage facility waited, its green door rattling each time wind curved along the corridor walls. She pressed the latch, but the mechanism stuck, and cold metal scraped her knuckles before the door swung free. Inside, stacked crates reached her shoulders; their number seemed to have risen at an exponential rate since breakfast. First she tried weaving between them, yet a jutting plank caught her jacket and pulled her sideways. Next she lifted the box overhead, stepped onto a low barrel, and shuffled along the makeshift ridge toward the shelf room. If she had dropped the package, shards would have sprayed like dry leaves across the dusty floor.
Reaching the shelf, she eased the tape and opened the box, expecting glossy volcanic glass no larger than a coin. Instead, pale tablets of compressed calcium rolled forward, clicking against cardboard like flat marbles in slow motion. Her brows lifted, and the corner of her mouth sagged while she compared container codes stamped on the inner lid. Another intern, Joel, hurried from a side aisle holding a second box and wearing the same puzzled tilt of shoulders. Both packages had been switched during unloading; his held the glass, hers the cafeteria supplements. They exchanged boxes without a word, then navigated back through the crates, each step lighter than the last corridor crossing. Soft afternoon light rested on the quiet shelves.
