Maeve pushed the stairwell door open; its metal sheets groaned, then rang softly against the tiled wall. Fluorescent tubes buzzed overhead while she squatted beside a wide glass jar that had been filled with warm water during science class. The jar had been placed on the second-floor landing window ledge, where thin autumnal air leaked through a loose frame. Golden hues from late-morning sun met the pale water, but her demonstration needed mist, not light. Ice rattled inside a small plastic bowl she carried from the cafeteria freezer. One by one, the cubes slid into the jar—plop, plop, plop. A faint hiss rose as the first cold hit the warmth; moisture clouded a finger-wide ring, yet the surface stayed mostly clear. The bell above the corridor clanged, slicing the hush, and footsteps echoed away. Her next period would start soon, and the responsibility for an effective experiment still sat on her knees.

During the fresh ten-minute break, Maeve returned with a second load: eight more cubes clinked against the glass, and the inner hum of rising vapor grew louder, like a distant kettle. Sweat beaded outside the jar, dripped, and pattered onto the sill. Water trickled along a groove, met scattered chalk dust, and the dust sizzled quietly as it wicked the drops. The jar remained only half-veiled. She hurried once more—another bell’s brief silence let her slip in a final batch. Twelve cubes cracked as they touched the warming melt below; suddenly, a soft whoosh ran across the surface, and a dense white film swept from base to rim in a single breath. On the floor above, Dean was reclining on a desk, tapping a pencil in slow rhythm. A loose timetable sheet skittered down the stairs toward the fire-exit door, rustling faster with every step.
