Grainy chalk dust clung to Dale’s thumbs as he pushed his worksheet aside and stood. The bell’s metallic echo bounced along the corridor, granting forty minutes of freedom before the next ring. He wanted the thick roll of craft paper locked in the supply closet, so his group poster might finally look neat. His trainers squeaked while he hurried through rows of desks, knees flexing to dodge scattered backpacks. Outside the classroom, his shoulder brushed a cracked armchair beside the office doorway, its padding sagging under forgotten weight. Each step down the polished corridor amplified the pull of the clock; the deadline felt almost tangible against his ribs. He reached the closet door, but the science teacher already rotated the handle and slipped inside ahead of him.
Dale rocked back on his heels, counted silent seconds, then retreated because one user at a time ruled the tiny room. The shelf had been cleared last week, yet fresh stacks now blocked every reachable corner. A halfway bell cracked the air, signaling the fifth of eight daily chimes that would close this window. He passed minutes stretching his arms along the corridor handrail, easing stiffness that crawled across his shoulders. When the door finally opened, a trolley of microscopes rolled out, yet heavy sports mats still walled off the shelf. He wedged fingers into the gap, but dense foam resisted every push. Lower on the floor, something iron glimmered; a sledgehammer pinned the craft paper beneath the mats like an anchor. It had been left there after a stage-building project, and even two strong tugs failed to free the roll.
Students drifted toward classrooms again; time tightened around Dale like a belt. He inhaled, waited until footsteps thinned, then reversed his order of moves instead of repeating brute pulls. First he gripped the sledgehammer’s rough wooden neck, balanced one boot against a lower shelf, and lifted slowly. The hammer slid free; mats sagged sideways under their own weight. Dust puffed upward, exposing yellowed streamers left from forgotten nuptials, their edges brittle enough to snap at a touch. Released from pressure, the roll edged forward, knocking his shin before settling against his calf. He bent his knees and was guiding the cylinder toward the doorway when the period’s final bell vibrated overhead.
