Grey clouds drifted above the school courtyard while Mira unfolded a tiny packet. The science club has collected many seeds this month, and her packet carried an exotic bean that needed quick planting before the lunch bell. She scooped a shallow trench, yet dry dust rose around her fingers; the overnight sprinkler had failed, and the watering can had been rolled away for repair. She had already checked the shed that stands behind the gym. With minutes slipping, she chose to improvise. A sports bottle swung from her backpack, still half-full. She poured the moisture over the trench, pressed the bean inside, and covered it with damp soil.

A shy breeze arrived, and the thick sky shifted. Rain had not been forecast, yet a light sprinkle tapped her shoulders. Mira’s hair darkened as fresh droplets met the ground. Surprised laughter burst from students hurrying across the paving stones. The soil she had watered moments earlier darkened further, and a delicate green point began to sprout through the top layer. She blinked twice and leaned closer; the bean’s early root tugged upward, encouraged by the sudden change. The bell rang across the courtyard, echoing against lockers. Mira brushed earth from her palms, rose from her knees, and watched fine rain settle across the fresh row.
