English Original

Dawn mist drifted above the riverside market while Milo arranged pottery on a low wooden table. His goal sat inside a padded box: a delicate clay swan whose glaze caught morning light. He wanted it placed at eye level on a taller shelf, certain that early collectors would notice. The shelf’s metal frame balanced on a narrow brick foundation he had built the night before. Initially everything looked steady; screws gleamed, boards lay flat, and even the breeze skimmed past without shaking them.

A thin stream of shoppers appeared sooner than expected, and footsteps rippled through the planked walkway. Each vibration nudged the shelf. Milo slid the swan onto the middle board, stepped back, and heard a soft creak. The board tilted. His hand darted forward, but the swan toppled, striking the edge and cracking cleanly in two. Shards scattered, and something unexpected rolled free—an old silver coin hidden inside the hollow figure, an unexplained bonus piece of material history.

The small discovery brought more bodies around the stall; coins always had that effect. Voices rose, elbows brushed, and the crowd’s weight pressed against Milo’s tables. He needed a quick survival strategy before more items broke. He crouched, found a spare plank, and tried to brace the listing shelf. The first attempt failed; the plank slipped on grit and thudded onto his shoe. A shopper gasped at the noise, and nearby paper bags rustled as browsers shifted.

Milo wiped dust from the plank, wedged it again, this time pushing one end beneath the brick foundation at an angle that bit into the timber frame. He gathered the pottery shards in a tray, set the silver coin in a separate crate he jokingly called his long-term holding, and guided the restless shelf back to stillness with both palms. Curious visitors leaned in, but the objects now stayed put. The newly wedged plank rested under the quiet stall roof.

Translation
