Maya eased her compact car beside the silent air pump outside a half-lit convenience store. Weeks of heavy traffic had eroded her wallet, so every kilometre of fuel efficiency mattered. The recommended pressure numbers had been stamped in fading blue on a plate near the driver’s door. She brushed dust off the metal and memorised them. After twisting the hose onto the valve, she squeezed the trigger firmly. The gauge flickered, then settled, but the glass cover reflected the parking-lot neon, hiding the thin lines. With a short sigh, she added another burst of air before rechecking the dial. Rubber stretched; the front tyre began to overinflate, its sidewall shining under the lights while the bumper shivered with a soft creak.

She crouched, thumb against the valve core, aiming to bleed a little air. The stem stuck, then let out a sudden hiss that sprayed her hair with dust. With every firm push, the stranger raised the car’s frame a little higher. After two dozen strokes, the bicycle gauge settled exactly on the number she had memorised. The stranger unscrewed a loose back plate; a bent spring clicked into place, and the wandering needle snapped to the correct spot. He casually wiped dark grease on his jeans and rolled inside for hot coffee. Maya tucked the pump into his backpack, closed her boot, and turned the key. Late-morning sunlight rested on the steady front wheel and the quiet asphalt.
