Milo stepped into the town square just after the clock rang ten. A cloudy sky pressed low, softening every edge of the tiled ground. He balanced a broad sketchbook against his elbow and studied the fountain at the center. Water arched, fell, and cycled again; an underlying principle of hidden pumps kept the rhythm steady, like breath. Damp air gathered on the bronze statues, and thin streams slipped off the basin’s rim, leaving dark streaks that served as quiet evidence of an earlier shower.
He scanned for a seat. The nearest wooden bench shone with moisture, so he tested it with two fingers, pulled back, then searched again. A stone ledge circled the fountain; he hopped up, boots sliding for a moment before gaining grip. Pencil met paper. A gust twisted the falling spray, and droplets speckled the page, blurring the first clean line. He leaned away, shielding his work with a forearm. As he adjusted, the water sheet shifted, and a distorted figure wavered behind the curtain, shoulders too wide, limbs bending where the surface bent light. Milo’s shoulders jerked; his pencil scraped a diagonal scar across the drawing before he realized the figure copied his own posture.
Curiosity tugged him forward. He closed the sketchbook, swung down, and edged along the basin. A pane of clear glass rose behind the cascade, part of a modern renovation he had not noticed from a distance. Flowing water and curved glass teamed up to stretch reflections; the trick produced that stranger’s outline. He laughed once under his breath, breath misting for a second in the cool air, and reopened the book. This time he traced both fountain and warped mirror, trying to capture every bent line. Wind thinned the curtain, then thickened it again, giving him a sequence of shifting frames.
Light strengthened as midday inched closer; clouds thinned just enough to grant sufficient brightness for finer details. Children circled the square, their running shoes sending small waves across stray puddles. Each new ripple broke the mirror image in different ways, supplying more patterns to chase across the page. By the time the clock chimed again, fresh shadows hugged the basin and several smudges darkened Milo’s fingertips. Water droplets rested on the smooth stone ledge.
Translation
