English Original
The low winter sun skimmed the panes of the old botanical house while Mara tested the latch. She aimed to capture the first glow of the solstice sliding across a night-blooming cactus rumored to open for less than an hour. The metal resisted; frost had glued parts together. Her glove slipped, and a brittle thread of unraveling twine dropped from the handle. Mara steadied the line, worked it back through the loop, and pressed again. A dull pop released the door, allowing an eddy of cold air to swirl past her boots and rattle leaves inside.
Moist breath curled from her lips as she stepped between rows of cracked tiles. Condensation clung to the glass in trembling beads, and each drip joined the floor with soft ticks, creating a quiet communion of water, air, and stone. Light advanced in a narrow beam, the greenhouse itself acting like a prism. Mara lifted her camera, adjusted focus, and waited. A sudden creak broke the hush; a wooden shelf sagged under the weight of old pots. Terra-cotta rubbed against terra-cotta until one container tipped, scattering soil across the path. From the spill, a leather-bound chronicle slid free, its cover mottled by years of damp.
Curiosity pulled her knees to the ground. She brushed dirt away, but before she could open the volume, the cactus at the center of the bench trembled. Petals unfurled in a single swift motion as if unrolling hidden silk. The flower caught the sunbeam exactly once; violet edges shimmered, then softened when a cloud drifted across the sky. Mara blinked, startled by the timing. She lifted the camera again, yet the lens fogged from her earlier breath. She wiped it with her sleeve, realigned, and pressed the shutter just as the cloud slipped aside, pouring brilliance onto the delicate bloom. The flash of color lasted seconds, a transient beauty that faded when the petals slowly folded inward.
She exhaled, wiped soil from her palms, and set the unopened book beside the pot, tracing its warped spine only long enough to feel grooves left by an absent clasp. Shadows lengthened over the tiles; creaks quieted; even the wind outside lowered to a murmur. On the bench, the camera rested beside the blooming cactus.
Translation
