Late morning light lay across the city park. A brown squirrel darted between roots toward an open picnic cloth. Warm sunlight flickered gently through the young maple leaves. A distant whistle mixed with the smell of fresh cut grass. An architect in a pale helmet studied a half-built footbridge nearby, and rolled tubes rested beside her boots. A line of fresh concrete has been poured under the bridge, and steam curled above it. Beside the cloth, a small bag of peanuts glimmered. One seam had torn, so a single nut balanced on the edge. The squirrel’s whiskers twitched and its tail gave a quick sway. Claws gripped bark, then the animal sprang onto the cloth. A bouncing football crossed its path and rolled the nut farther across the grass.

The nut sat on open turf, twelve tail-lengths away, while players in shirts raced around it. One player slipped, and his teammate swung a foot, sending the football toward the nut. That ball has curved across the field many times this morning. The sudden kick startled a white dove that had pecked near the center line. Wings slapped air; the bird rose, and its shadow drifted over the squirrel. The animal flattened, then slipped into a low dive under moving legs. Cleats thudded; grass blades flicked across its fur, yet no foot touched the body. At the far touchline, the football tapped the nut. Both objects rolled until a shallow rut stopped them. The squirrel reached the rut first and seized the prize. It scrambled up the nearest trunk toward what looked like limitless sky. Shell shards fell, and the game continued below as the creature gripped a steady branch.

那顆花生停在開闊草地上，距離松鼠約十二個尾巴長度，球衣少年們在四周奔跑。一名球員滑了一下，他的隊友抬腳踢出足球，再次朝向花生。那顆球今天早上已經在場上畫過許多弧線。突然的踢擊驚起一隻在中線啄食的白鴿，振翅而起的影子掠過松鼠。松鼠壓低身體，隨即貼地鑽入移動的雙腿間。球鞋重重踏地，草葉掃過牠的皮毛，卻沒有一隻腳碰到牠。球在遠端邊線輕碰花生，兩樣東西滾動，直到一道淺溝將它們擋住。松鼠率先抵達溝邊，叼起獎品，沿最近的樹幹向上爬去，頭頂是一片近乎無垠的天空。碎裂的殼片墜落，球賽在下方繼續，而牠穩穩抓住一條結實的枝條。
