Mara Beside the Flowerbed-

Story Content
English Original
Mara set her sketchbook on the low wall beside the flowerbed, hoping to capture the broad landscape beyond the garden. The air carried damp soil, and bees droned above open petals. A squirrel paused on the wall, its tail whipping like a loose ribbon, then darted toward the watering can. She had already traced gentle hills in graphite, yet noon glare bounced off the white page and blurred every line. If she had chosen the shadier bench, the image would have stayed clear. She shuffled sideways; the wooden seat wobbled and bumped her arm.
As she mixed a pale green, the sprinkler head clicked and leaned. A wavering jet swept over the grass; the first outlines had been washed away before her hand could shield them. Mara pressed the book to her shirt and stepped back, scattering a paltry pile of acorns the squirrel had collected. The animal sprang, seized a stray pencil, and dashed across the path. Her adaptation came quickly: she snapped a fallen twig, shaved its tip with a penknife, and scratched softer marks while the improvised tool slid across damp paper.
Uneven strokes merged with raindrop stains, shaping cloud shadows she had not planned. The lost pencil reappeared when the squirrel dropped it beside a clay pot; muddy footprints crossed the margin like accidental calligraphy. If the clouds had stayed, the color might have settled more gently, yet the new texture deepened distant fields. She dabbed water, lifted pigment, and layered ochre over the prints, turning smudges into trees on a far ridge. Wind slowed; sprinklers clicked silent; petals rested against dark soil. Sunlight rested across the finished page.
Translation
