Late afternoon light rested on the playground, and warm asphalt breathed out faint heat. A soft hum of traffic blended with the smell of new grass beside the swings. Milo carried a bright paper kite that he had built during lunch break. A poster, faded by sun, showed children who take part in next week's spring fair. He has tested many small toys here before, so the wide yard felt friendly. He tried to keep in mind the sudden gusts that often crossed the open space. As he unrolled the string, the spool slipped. A stubborn knot tightened firmly near the center. Two classmates, Lila and Ken, trotted over and crouched beside him. They wanted to have fun with the first launch.

Wind pushed a plastic bag across the court, brushing Ken's ankle. The unexpected push made all three children bounce back, then laugh. Milo showed the knot; the others began to share ideas through quick gestures and careful fingers. For several tries, nothing loosened the tight knot. Then a second, sharper gust yanked the tail. The string twitched, and the loop suddenly opened. The kite shot upward before anyone took action, tugging Milo's wrists. It skimmed a puddle, caught a stray feather, and spun into clear air. The yard, which had been quiet, now rang with cheers. Red, yellow, and blue cloth strips danced against the pale sky. The spool settled in Milo's steady grip while the kite hovered calmly above the roof.
