Mia pushed the heavy door of the small village library, carrying a toolbox against her hip. Fresh paint brightened the entrance, while the faint scent of sawdust hung under the rafters. The renovation had been originally planned to finish by Friday that summer. Yet one patch of bare brick still interrupted the otherwise tidy walls. She aimed to place a wide cork notice board there, so weekend visitors could pin local schedules. The board already waited on a table, its metal brackets attached firmly. Metal rails had been stored beneath plastic sheets, ready to offer robust support once everything aligned. Outside, steady rain tapped on windows, adding quiet rhythm to her task.
Mia unfolded a step-ladder and drove the first anchor into the brick. Crumbly dust poured out and quickly left the hole completely useless inside. She tried a second point with thicker screws; the drill whirred, then clicked as its charge faded. She switched to a manual screwdriver, yet its shaft slipped, grazing her knuckles. The ladder wobbled on a loose floorboard, forcing her to step back. While searching for steadier footing, she pulled one of the spare metal rails forward. She wedged it between ladder feet and tested the new balance with a cautious push.
With the ladder secured, Mia tapped along the brick to find solid stone. A hollow thump suddenly answered her knuckles behind the thin hard surface. Curious, she carefully chipped away the loose mortar along the narrow crack. A thin section of brittle plaster finally broke free with several tiny snaps. A small tin box slid out and clinked on the floor like an unexpected reward. Yellowed pamphlets spilled across the tiles, each describing past community advocacy for building the library she was repairing. She brushed dust from the board, then drilled fresh holes beside the discovery. The thicker rail held steady, allowing screws to sustain the board against daily bumps. The notice board finally rested against the wall, straight and steady, firmly.
Translation
