Fine grit along the supply closet’s sliding rail pressed against Cleo’s fingertips as she tested the panel. Her class needed one deep-blue carton of poster paper before the bell, and the stack waited behind the half-stuck door. She wedged her palm into the narrow gap, pulled, and an audible creak rolled along the steel-grey rail. The panel moved barely a finger’s width, exposing only the corner of a label and still denying her reach. She glanced at the corridor; footsteps echoed toward the stairs, leaving a short window before another group crossed the threshold. Grabbing a thin plastic ruler from a nearby shelf, she slid it between door and frame, trapping the first sliver of space. That ruler held the gap, yet the carton remained far wider than the opening she had won.
Cleo searched the art trolley outside the door, hoping to unearth something flatter yet strong enough to wedge. A wooden mixing stick once dipped by a hurried painter now lay beneath loose erasers. She slid the stick beside the ruler, and the creak deepened while another millimetre of silver track showed. Still, her stretched fingers brushed only cold air where the carton’s handle curved just beyond reach. A bell down the corridor rang, and its echo warned that new footsteps would rattle the panel. She waited until the echo faded, then leaned her shoulder against the frame during the brief hush. With the hallway still, she pressed steadily, and the door slid five millimetres at once. That surge widened the opening to fist size, flipping need into access in a clean metallic shuffle. She reached through, secured the blue-grey carton, and lifted it clear of the improvised wedges.
Balancing the carton against her hip, Cleo nudged the wedges free and watched them drop into the plastic bin. Powdery dust puffed up, hanging in the fluorescent cast like pale snowflakes before sinking. She had already pictured the poster her group planned, hoping to draw inspiration from the cool tones inside the box. Across the corridor, Xavier stacked handouts, unaware of the quiet victory unfolding just beside him. The worn groove along the rail had been ignored by maintenance all year, yet now a bright ribbon of metal gleamed. The rail that had scraped her fingers earlier now showed a cleaner silver strip where the door had slid free.
