Thin steam lifted from the wet outfield, and the smell of cut grass drifted toward the empty stands. Darren reached the diamond before anyone else; the storm the night before had scattered equipment across clay and gravel. A single dragonfly fluttered above a shallow puddle near home plate, its wings catching pale light. Beside it lay a lonely baseball half buried in mud, marked by yesterday’s swings. Darren had planned to collect every loose ball before the team arrived; their coach had announced a morning training session with clear objectives for pitching speed and ground-ball drills, and Darren wanted everything in place the moment players trotted through the gate.
He pushed the metal cart forward, eager to get the ball rolling, yet the left wheel refused to turn. Water had seeped inside the axle; rust had already been forming, and the wheel was gripped by gritty sand. If he had known about the damage earlier, he would have lifted the cart instead of forcing it. Darren knelt, pried small stones away, and rocked the frame until the wheel finally loosened. A splash rose against his sleeve; mud streaks spread across his forearm, but the cart inched ahead. One recovered baseball after another thudded into the plastic crate, and the morning light climbed higher over the bleachers as he worked.
When the crate neared its limit, the handle hinge snapped with a dry pop, spilling three balls back onto wet clay. Darren staggered, caught the crate against his chest, and steadied it on the grass. He shifted strategy, stacking the remaining balls inside his cap and jogging twice between mound and bench until every sphere lay secure. By the time teammates entered the field, their shoes splashing in leftover puddles, the cart stood beside first base, filled, silent, and tilted toward the chalked line.
Translation
