Dawn left a pale stripe above the town stadium. Mateo jogged once around the track, breath turning white near his chin, then carried a flexible pole toward the high-jump mat. He aimed to clear a new personal benchmark before school began. Cool air sharpened the smell of cut grass, and distant roofs glimmered with dew that broke into tiny beads when wind brushed them. A loose banner flapped behind the silent spectator stand, its fabric snapping against metal rails without rhythm.
The bar stood at chest height, but the sagging sand pit pressed unevenly against the standards. Mateo had trained all week and knew the angle he wanted, yet on his first run the pole tip skidded over the worn threshold painted on the runway, losing speed so the bar toppled backward. He steadied the metal rod, raised the bar again, and packed damp sand beneath each upright. The second attempt lifted him higher; even so, his shoulder brushed the bar, and it rolled along the groove before dropping. While resetting, he noticed a gap under the lowest seat. A leather-bound journal lay inside, edges feathered by years of heat and cold.
He opened the cover just enough to keep the spine intact. Sketches of jumps filled the pages, each dated; the handwriting belonged to an athlete who had practised here long before the current synthetic track had been laid. One page recorded a leap five centimetres above Mateo’s goal. Without reading further, he tucked the book under the seat again, raised the standard another notch, and swapped his lighter spikes for a heavier pair stored in his bag. On the third charge, the pole bent smoothly; his hips floated clear, and the bar quivered yet stayed in place. Morning light hung over the empty track.
