The wooden floor cooled Mara’s knees as she knelt, tracing paint flakes that had built up like thin bark along a metal locker door. A length of braided cord—once a bright skipping rope—peeked out from the narrow gap below the door. She had promised her younger cousin a game, and the original rope sat inside, faded but familiar. Warm air drifted from a vent, carrying stale chalk and the sharper scent of rubber mats.

Mara set her half-empty coffee cup on a beam of light and pulled. The latch refused to lift; it had been welded tight by time and four layers of grey paint. She continued to strive for even the smallest movement, rocking the handle until her knuckles reddened. If she had brought oil, the latch would have turned easily.
