Crumbs of dried glue had gathered along the corridor skirting overnight, tracing yesterday’s craft scramble in pale dots. A burnt-paper smell floated from the photocopier alcove, mixing with the waxy scent of the polished floor while Nora crossed the shine toward the supply closet. Laughter rippled from the classroom behind her; the burst echoed off lockers and left a sweet, humid breath that reminded her of warm cinnamon milk. She slid the closet’s metal door, but the rail carried a bitter, metallic whiff and stopped halfway. A thin mantle of chalk dust puffed from the track and scratched the back of her throat like pepper. Inside, reams of coloured paper waited beyond arm’s reach, sealed in plastic that smelled faintly of new rubber toys. Nora pressed one shoulder against the frame, hoping friction alone would widen the gap, yet the panel refused to move.
A dry-plastic aroma seeped from marker bins stacked high, and the confined air felt thick, almost pillow-soft around her cheeks. If she had kept hauling straight on, the jammed door would only have scraped her knuckles raw. Instead, she bent her knees, angled her elbow sideways, and slipped her forearm through the narrow opening, where stale cardboard warmth clung to every shelf. The surprise came from above: a roll of clear tape started to unwind itself, its crisp adhesive odor spiralling downward as the strip loosened in silence. She jerked her head back just before the sticky tail brushed her hair, then returned to the task, palm sliding over dusty edges until fingertips grazed the cool plastic wrapper. Behind her, corridor air shifted; the bell’s first vibration carried a faint ozone tang that signalled the next period’s rush. Nora balanced on one knee, fingers curling around the packet while the stubborn door trembled against her shoulder.
Translation
