Thin beams of afternoon light crossed the empty school auditorium, warming patches of varnished floor while cool air drifted near the ceiling girders. Mara and Leo had carried a huge painted canvas to the narrow balcony that circled the stage. The artwork stood taller than either of them, and its bright colors lost scale against the heights around them. From below, chairs waited in silent rows. Mara steadied the ladder; Leo lifted one corner. Bits of cloth brushed his face and left a smell of fresh pigment. Short dialogue rose and fell between them, only a few words at a time, each echo sliding into the curtains.

Their first attempt stalled when the top hook refused to fit. The metal edge caught threads of the canvas, and the weight pulled Leo’s arms downward. He leaned back, trying a slower angle. The ladder’s rubber foot slipped half a finger’s width; wood grated over painted floorboards. Mara shifted her grip, moved a step higher, and offered the hook again. The effort had already drained the benefit of their earlier rest, yet they kept changing positions—sometimes both on the ladder, sometimes one bracing the frame from below. After several tries the hook finally accepted the bar with a dull scrape, but a side rope still sagged.

While tightening that rope, Leo’s knuckles struck something wedged behind the wooden frame. A small object tumbled out: a smooth carving shaped like a lionheart, half mane, half stylized heart, polished to a deep shine. Neither spoke for a moment; their breathing filled the balcony. Mara turned the carving in her palm; reflected light danced across the painted surface. She slipped it into a pocket, then pulled the final rope until the canvas lifted true. Far beneath their shoes, colored shapes spread across the stage floor like ripples of water. A faint ribbon of dust hung beneath the frame.
