A battered watering can bumped against his knee, half-filled from the barrel earlier that morning. The hedgehog shuffled closer, startled each time clods rolled toward its tiny feet, yet it remained. Rafael poured a thin stream from the watering can, letting moisture loosen the stubborn surface. A faint rumble hinted at clouds gathering beyond the rooftops, but skies above the garden still held pale sunlight. Rafael repeated the improvised method for several more holes; every time, the stick speared, water softened, and hands pressed. When the tray emptied, he reached for the last splash of water to tidy the soil. The hedgehog suddenly squeezed under a plank and reappeared carrying a lost metal button in its mouth; it dropped the shiny circle beside the final plant as if offering payment.
