The Rug That Moved- 適合中級的英語短篇故事

Warm air from a street vent mixed with varnish and dust. A narrow door beside the warehouse hung open, and a young raccoon slipped inside. Humans have upgraded the building this month, so old furniture waited in uneven towers, ready to leave. Boxes that people had donated sat between chair legs, and a rug showing a grey wolf face curled against one wall. The raccoon pressed his nose into a soft green cushion that lay under a cracked desk. He tugged, but one table leg pinned the cloth.

A distant forklift rumbled; vibrations made the stacked chairs wobble. The cushion was trapped, and time was shrinking. The raccoon scampered onto a low footstool shaped like a wooden bear, then pushed his weight against the rolled rug. The wolf’s eyes stretched as the rug unfurled and slid across the smooth floor, bumping the desk. The table shifted just enough; the cushion rolled free. Claws hooked the edge of the prize, and the raccoon dragged it toward the open door. A chair that blocked the gap wobbled, yet it stayed upright. Outside, evening light reached the shrubs, and the raccoon vanished among leaves, the green cushion scraping over concrete until both shapes settled under the branches.
