Seeds After the Shake-

English Original
Warm sunlight touched the wooden bench that crossed the quiet park path. A grey squirrel gripped a pine cone nearly as big as its head, then hopped onto the bench. The cone’s weight bent the animal’s front legs, yet the tail stayed high for balance. Wind shook yellow leaves across the slats, but no branch stood above the food store waiting in a tall oak. For a short moment, traffic noise mixed with dry leaf rustling; no passer-by seemed to notice the small climber preparing its haul.
The distance from the bench to the first low branch remained the main problem. The squirrel dragged the cone to the far end, crouched, and tried a jump, yet the gap stayed just out of reach. A soft rain began, turning the smooth seat slick. While the animal adjusted its grip, an athlete in bright shoes jogged past; each footfall sent tiny tremors through the bench. On the third step the cone slipped, rolled across wet wood, and dropped onto the packed earth. It struck a stone and cracked. Seeds spilled like pepper over the dark ground, an outcome neither runner nor squirrel had expected.
The squirrel froze for a breath, then darted after the scattered food. Gathering loose seeds proved lighter work than lifting the broken cone. It stuffed cheeks, climbed the oak trunk, and pressed the harvest into a narrow nook. Eventually the rain weakened, and the branch stopped swaying. The broken shell lay below, pieces arranged so neatly that the whole scene would only make sense to anyone who looked closely.
Translation
