English Original
Dust drifted inside the garden shed, catching late sunlight like slow snow. A narrow shelf had been fixed above the window, and its substantial plank bowed under jars, nails, and a small wooden box. Leo raised his arm; the box sat just beyond his reach. On the floor, a ferret nosed between paint cans, his whiskers twitching at every new smell. The shed offered a different paradigm of order: nothing lay where a person expected, and every corner hid something forgotten.
Leo pushed an up-turned bucket beneath the shelf, yet its bottom rocked on a loose screw. He stepped down, dragged a crate closer, and stacked both objects together. The tower creaked, so he steadied it with one foot and stretched again. Fingers brushed the box, but the stack tilted and a jar clinked against glass, forcing him to hop back. If he had measured the plank earlier, the crate would have fitted without that wobble. He grabbed a broom, lifted the bristles, and used the handle as a lever. Progress came in gradual taps; the box edged forward, then stopped against a stubborn nail.
One last nudge freed it. The box slipped, spun once, and burst open on the floor. Instead of the treat of dried berries Leo expected, only bent nails scattered over the boards. The ferret darted through the metal pieces, vanished behind a sack, and reappeared with a paper pouch clenched in its teeth. Berry scent rose at once, stronger than dust or paint. Leo crouched, laughing soundlessly as the animal dropped the pouch and pawed it until seeds spilled in a tiny red stream. Loose shavings rested around the quiet animal.
Translation
