The bulb blinked once more, then darkened. Elias knelt, eased the side panel open, and blew away a lace of cobwebs. Instead, a slim bundle of onion-skin pages rested on cracked felt, each page numbered in the corner by a careful hand. The handwriting belonged to an unknown novelist—the loops were deliberate, the ink still bold, the sentences long and captivating like breath held too long under water. Threadbare ribbon tied the stack; its knot fell apart with a soft twitch, and the pages lifted at their corners as air swirled through the open panel. Lines about rivers, trains, and night fields crossed the top sheet, pausing mid-phrase as if a voice had been interrupted decades earlier. Elias gathered the pages, yet the drawer stayed half-open.
