Closing-time announcements had already clicked through the speakers, and Luke needed three narrow slips from the printer: section, shelf, and copy code. He refreshed the screen, typed the first search, and a thin strip edged out. Its paper felt slightly damp from the machine’s heat, yet still stiff. One part secured, two still missing.

A new queue formed as another patron stepped aside, so Luke slid in, his palms pressing the ridged rubber floor mat for balance while the terminal reset. If the machine jammed again, he would run out of time. He waited for the green light to stop blinking before entering the second set of numbers; the advanced passive routine had been loaded by the system, and the printer stirred. A second slip emerged, curling softly against his thumb—still not enough. Lights dimmed over the far stacks, and staff began rolling carts between aisles. Luke altered the order of fields, choosing the author search first, then the title. The printer paused, then pushed out a third sheet; all three now lay side by side under the lamp like a quiet banquet of maps.

He pinched the slips together and traced their codes through the shrinking lit zone, wood grain warm beneath his fingertips. The album waited on a lower shelf; faded gold letters on its spine carried a dry mystique. He lifted it, the leather rough yet pliable, and carried it to the nearby sofa, where the cushion gave gently under the weight. Opening the cover, he found several plates missing, only blank vellum remaining. Luke walked back to the terminal. The screen that had glowed pale blue an hour earlier was now dark, holding nothing but smudged reflections of passing shoes.
