English Original

Milo pushed open the side door of the old town hall just after the afternoon rain. Peeling posters from distant seasons clung to the brick, each pale square marking earlier evenings at the venue. The new string quartet would arrive soon, and Milo aimed to dress the bare room in festive color. He flicked the master switch but only half the ceiling bulbs responded with weak, uncertain light. Someone had stored a wooden ladder behind stacked chairs, so he dragged it forward, its rubber feet scratching the floor. A box of paper lanterns waited nearby, flashing red birds painted across thin circles of rice paper.

Balancing on the third rung, Milo threw the first cord over a beam and pulled until it tightened. The beam creaked, and the wire slipped, forcing him to steady the lantern string once more. He climbed down, shifted the ladder two meters left, and tried again with slower, measured tugs. During the second attempt, his elbow nudged a thin wooden panel high on the wall beside the beam. It swung loose, releasing an array of folded cards that drifted like tired butterflies onto the dusty stage. When he gathered them, he found handwritten feedback from concerts held long before his first visit. Edges had yellowed, ink had blurred, yet quick notes about cellos and encores remained readable.

Rather than sweep the pile into a bin, Milo threaded each card between the lantern cords. They hung in uneven intervals, so past voices mixed with present color instead of turning into waste. He stepped back, examined the angle, then shifted two lanterns lower to keep the cards from twisting. At last he crossed to the switch again; this time the bulbs blinked, then burned a steady white. Light poured through the paper circles, tinting the cards rose and gold across the widening room. Milo lifted the empty box onto a chair, though another bundle of lanterns still waited for placement. Card edges fluttered beneath the slow glow, while faint music from a rehearsal room echoed beyond the doorway.

Translation
