When the Cart Touched the Planets- 適合中級的英語短篇故事

Jonas stretched his arms for a quick exercise inside the museum lobby, counting steps on a mobile app that glowed in his pocket. While he rose on tiptoe, his elbow touched a small wheeled cart that the staff had parked beside a pillar.

The cart rolled away, slow at first, then faster on the polished floor. Its front edge nudged a narrow plinth, and the plinth tipped just enough to strike a hanging mobile shaped like planets. Metal rings clinked, and the lowest ring tapped a tall glass jar on the next stand. The jar rocked once, twice, and its loose lid slid off. The falling lid landed on a shelf that displayed antique grooming tools; the sudden weight pushed a wooden grooming brush over the edge. Bristles first, the brush dropped but met a velvet rope barrier stretched between brass posts. The soft rope bent, caught the brush, and stopped the chain of bumps from spreading further.

Dust from the high windows floated through bright afternoon stripes of light, and cool air from ceiling vents brushed Jonas’s cheeks. He has visited many museums where exhibits stay perfectly still, yet today objects have moved without anyone speaking. The mobile above him kept spinning, rings crossing paths and casting slow circles of color on the floor.
