Orange light stretches across the backyard in early evening. Leo has tested the paper gliders all afternoon on the short wind corridor beside the hedge, and automatic sprinklers are due to begin a full sweep before the light slips behind the roof. A first thin spray already turns part of the lawn dark and shiny; each slow turn of the metal head moves the water line closer to the table where the gliders wait. The toys will bend once wet, so reaching them becomes his single task. Warm soil releases a dusty smell, and distant traffic hums beneath the quiet sky. He takes two quick steps, then stops. A fallen clothesline, still tied to a heavy basket, lies across the grass like a loose rope. The line is caught on a nail, blocking the straight route. Behind him, the spray hisses again, marking a new, wider arc that soaks the nearest stepping stones.

Cold droplets now dot Leo’s sleeves; he motivates himself to decide fast. He can circle along the dry gravel path beside the wall—longer but steady—or dash straight over the slick grass where the rope angles, risking a slip. He lowers his shoulders and chooses speed. Shoes slap against the wet ground, water splashing above his ankles. Halfway through, his pocket rattles; a tiny plastic elephant bounces free and disappears beneath the grass. Searching would delay him, so he pushes on. Near the table, a sudden flick of color halts his stride: a chameleon clings to a brick, skin shifting from leafy green to bark brown as the spray brushes its tail. The sight pauses him, yet he ducks under the table just before the next burst arrives. The sprinklers keep turning beyond his shoes. A paper glider flutters against his knee.
